We were called in by a customer to look at a beautiful antique marble surround that had been restored and refitted by a odd jobs man, very very badly. The only fix was to remove the surround and dismantle, which was very hard as someone had slapped epoxy resin all over it. Once it was all separated the marble was polished and the surround rebuilt. The cast iron insert had the tiles removed before being sandblasted, welded and refinished in a heat proof black paint. Then finally the whole thing was refitted looking much better and ready for use. Pics below.
