Antique fireplaces supplied and installed in Sydenham (SE26), South East London.

Today we supplied and installed two antique Edwardian tiled combination fireplaces with original tiles. The fireplaces were fitted in a through lounge, one purely for decoration the other as a solid fuel installation. We needed to install a constructional sub-hearth as the previous owners had removed it when they removed the fireplaces. Both fireplaces were fitted with slate hearths. Pics on

Recently we removed 3 cast iron fireplaces from a big period property in Bromley. The owner was lucky enough that most of the fireplaces were complete and we could replace all the missing bits by casting them replacement parts from the bits from their fireplaces. The part is taken to a foundry where a sand pattern is made from it, once completed the pattern is filled with molten iron. Exactly how they were originally made. Once the parts were ready we fitted them to the fireplaces before refinishing in a lead black finish and fitting them with slate hearths and template made gas coal effect fires. Pics on very soon.

Today we removed a customers period wood surround and refitted the wood surround with a slate hearth and slips. The customer had experienced smoke backing into the room whilst burning in there grate. We assessed the problem as being caused by the opening on the chamber being to big to allow the fireplace to draw properly, the solution being to use slate slips to close down the opening, intensifying the draw. Pics on as soon as we get a minute.

Meanwhile in the workshop….

Well its Marble season again!! For some reason after Easter we seem to get a sudden influx of marble restorations. We currently have 8 on the go!! For some reason summer seems to mean lots of cast iron polishing as well, which is always great in the heat!

We removed 2 antique marbles and cast iron inserts in desperate need of some TLC. When removed marble surrounds commonly separate into panels, then the panels need to be repaired then polished and finally rebuilt. Its similar with the cast iron, first its sandblasted back to bare metal then any repairs are carried out before being finished in the desired finish. The fireplaces were installed as gas fireplaces with slate hearths. The whole process takes around 3-4 weeks from removal to refitting.
